Necessity
〇 We live in a world facing environmental degradation, climate change and food insecurity, that have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine;
〇 By 2050, up to 55% of the world population will be living in urban areas, consuming 80% of the world’s food;
〇 FAO estimates that up to 181M people in 41 countries could face a food crisis;
〇 One of the biggest challenges is the need to create “sustainable cities” which are food sufficient;
〇 Urban Agriculture (UA) has been identified as a solution for food security, climate and ecosystem resilience, health and well-being, job creation and social equity;
〇 UA educational programmes can help YP to adopt healthier, more sustainable lifestyles and be more active in their communities.
Objectives
〇 To engage young people in setting up and maintaining VEGETABLE GARDENS in URBAN AREAS;
〇 The project will utilize Urban Agriculture as a vehicle to lay the ground toward BUILDING more SUSTAINABLE, resilient, FOOD SELF-SUFFICIENT and inclusive COMMUNITIES in urban areas that bring positive social, environmental and economic impact.
